LimeWire vs Music Companies
The major music companies had been issuing warnings to LimeWire and fellow peer-to-peer software companies about the possible repercussions of their actions. A group of music companies that include Sony BMG, Virgin Records, and Warner Bros. Records have accused LimeWire and its company’s officers of copyright infringement.
The suit was filed in early August in the U.S. District Court in New York. LimeWire makes software that can be used by music pirates to create copies of music recordings and then distribute them over the internet.
The group of music companies are asking for compensatory and punitive damages, like US$150,000 for every song that was distributed without permission.
The group of music companies want the file-sharing companies to do one of two things: either adopt a business model that compensates record companies, or shut down.
